This whisky distillery tucked away in the upper reaches of the River Spey near Ballindalloch Castle, taking its water from the Craggan Burn. It’s two miles off the official Malt Whisky Trail route, but well worth the short detour. Cragganmore (Big Rock – named after the hill to the south) was one of the first whisky distilleries we ever visited, back in early 2012, and the friendly welcome was probably partly responsible for our future interest in whisky (though the spirit itself may also have had something to do with it!). Founded in 1869, the distillery is now owned by the Diageo mega-brand but retains a traditional feel and doesn’t tend to get overrun with tourists. Its short, flat-topped stills are one of its distinctive features; they may have been designed this way to fit underneath the low stillhouse roof, but probably have an equally distinctive effect on the whisky produced here.
