Dollar, Clackmannanshire
★★★
Castle Campbell’s alternative name – Castle Gloom – possibly conjures up images of a dingy or unwelcoming residence in a dark location. In reality, the setting on the slopes of the Ochil Hills high above Dollar couldn’t be more glorious – especially if the sun is shining. The well-preserved tower house has parts dating back to the early 1400s, and for much of its history belonged to Campbell Earls of Argyll, becoming the Lowland seat for a this powerful Highland clan. There are superb views from the higher levels of the tower across the flat expanse of southern Clackmannanshire, with beautiful footpaths winding through Dollar Glen to the namesake settlement; why not park in town and make the approach on foot?
