📌 Creetown, Dumfries & Galloway
★★

The jagged outlines of Cairnholy I and Cairnholy II overlook the Galloway coastline of Creetown. These spiky rocks are the pillars that once formed the inner chambers of two burial cairns constructed around 4,000 to 6,000 years ago. Stones originally covering the top of them have long since been removed for nearby wall construction, but this allows good views of the inner compartments: helpful for seeing how the interiors were laid out. Cairnholy I is next to the car park and the most eye-catching, while Cairnholy II is said to be the resting place of mythical Scottish King Galdus.
