📌 Village in Scottish Borders
★★
Geographically speaking, Burnmouth has a simple claim to fame: it’s the first settlement on Scotland’s east coast after crossing the border from neighbouring England. But look more closely at a detailed map and the village actually consists of four or five separate parts. The largest and least interesting component is a newer cluster of houses (with a useful pub) at the top of the cliffs; head downhill to reach the more characterful Burnmouth Harbour area. Narrow roads (better suited to walking than heavy vehicle traffic) lead in both directions along the foot of the cliffs to other focal points: Partanhall to the north, Cowdrait and Ross to the south. There are almost no shops and services, but views from sea level and from the top of town are worth stopping for. There are also worthwhile coastal walks – especially heading north in the direction of Eyemouth.
