Brechin‘s 13th century cathedral is the building responsible for the illusions of grandeur held by the local football club (Brechin City) and other organisations around the town. It’s certainly an impressive sight for a small town, and comes complete with an 11th or 12th century round tower alongside its usual, square one. The shape of the tower is very unusual outwith Ireland – the only other two, non-Irish examples are found at Abernethy (in Kinross-shire) and on the Isle of Man. As for the church itself: it used to be the mother church for all of Angus and the Mearns, but closed for regular worship in 2021, and there is currently no access to the interior.
