📌 Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire
★★
The street name Roman Road gives the secret away, otherwise you’d never guess what lies in the middle of this affluent Glaswegian suburb. The extensive bath house and latrine block were constructed to serve an adjacent Roman fort and you can still see how the various rooms were laid out – the frigidarium, tepidarium, caldarium and other stages in the bathing process are all visible. But why Bearsden? By chance, it lies directly over the path of the Antonine Wall (the northern equivalent of better-known Hadrian’s Wall), which runs approximately from Clydebank on the west coast to Bo’ness on the tidal Forth in the east.
