📌 Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire

The remains of Barr Castle are visible from the A760, on the left when leaving Lochwinnoch en route to Kilbirnie, but avid castle buffs can get closer via a nearby cycle path. There are some interesting features visible close up, such as the triangular gable above the entrance, faintly inscribed with the initials of late 16th century owners Margaret Hamilton and John Wallace. The four-storey ruin dates back a little further to around 1500, and used to be accompanied by a courtyard and various outbuildings, of which little remains. The interior doesn’t look safe to enter, and trees growing out of the roof don’t inspire much confidence either; approach with care.

💬 From Lochhead Avenue it’s a 10-min walk (each way) to the castle ( Easy). Follow the tarmac cycle path (signposted as NCN 7) south, soon turning right at a T-junction. Follow the cycle path (now an old railway bed) for 0.5 mi until the castle is visible across a field. An informal path cuts through undergrowth to a point where a fence must carefully be crossed (pallets to help on our visit) to enter the field.
