Balmenach Distillery isn’t well known, but you might have heard of its product: Caorunn Gin (pronounced ka-ROON, and derived from the Gaelic word for rowan berry). All the gin is distilled in the world’s only copper berry chamber – a device originally created in the US to extract essential oils for perfumes. Five botanicals (rowan berry, heather, bog myrtle, dandelion and coul blush apple) found within a 10-minute walk of the distillery are combined with six more traditional gin botanicals to create the standard version of this small-batch spirit gin – though the raspberry-infused version is the one I get most excited about. We enjoyed our sample-rich tour and tasting in 2025.
