Glen Tromie is a long, straight glen stretching for several miles south from Kingussie – and nearly joining up with Glen Garry on the other side of the Cairngorms. This circuit is merely a taster for the glen, approaching from Ruthven Barracks (also worth a visit) over a low hill, giving great views of steep sided Croidh-la. After a rough and – in places – boggy descent, a good track is followed along the valley floor, eventually returning to the start via Insh Marshes nature reserve. This could be a useful ramble for a day when snow or cloud renders the area’s higher hills inaccessible or unappealing.
