Following the B887 west from Bunavoneadar, you’ll soon realise this is a special part of the North Harris coastline. Unspoiled rocky inlets backed by remote hills, sheep far outnumbering people… and then around the 1,000th sharp bend is the last thing you expect to see: a magnificent, baronial castle surrounded by immaculate lawns, with a stunning waterfall tumbling into Loch Leosavay as the icing on the cake. The castle used to form the centrepiece of the North Harris Estate – which has been community-owned since 2003 – and now operates as an exclusive accommodation venue; the Amhuinnsuidhe name (Abhainn Suidhe in Gaelic) also describes the scattered crofting settlement which shares this stretch of coastline. Parking is scarce and you can’t tour the castle interior, but the views are reason enough to visit.
