The Great Tapestry of Scotland is an extraordinary piece of artwork, crafted by communities the length and breadth of Scotland from Galloway to Shetland. Originally proposed by author Alexander McCall Smith and inspired by the Prestonpans Tapestry, it depicts the cultural heritage, history and landscapes of Scotland across 160 perfectly stitched panels, painstakingly achieved through 50,000 hours of labour from 1,000 stitchers. Events and themes on display range from The Formation of Scotland, through the Picts and Vikings, the founding of the universities, Flodden, the Reformation, the 1745 Jacobite Rising, Gaelic and golf, the Enlightenment, the Clearances, the Industrial Revolution, whisky and the World Wars to today’s Scottish Parliament – taking the visitor on a journey which feels almost overwhelming for a single visit. Nevertheless, there are few better places to go for an overview of what Scotland is – captured in 300 miles of thread.
