📌 Duffus, Moray
★★

The perfectly rectangular village of Duffus, on the road between the county capital of Elgin and the Moray coast village of Hopeman, is probably best known for the private boarding school of Gordonstoun and for 12th century Duffus Castle. However, there is a third notable building on the east side of the village: St Peter’s Kirk. Built at the same time as the castle, it was damaged during the early 14th century in the Wars of Independence, then repaired and later rebuilt as a Presbyterian place of worship after the Reformation, so different parts of the church date from very different periods. A 14th century, four metre-high mercat cross can be found in the graveyard.
