The Macpherson-Grant family of Ballindalloch Castle have been involved in producing whisky sine 1869. Since 2013 that story has continued at Ballindalloch Distillery, converted from an 1848 farm steading just half a mile from the castle (joint tickets available) and at the heart of Speyside. Operations are pleasingly family-orientated: barley is grown at the estate’s local farm, draff leftover in the mash tun is fed to the local cattle… and there were two family members working on site during our 2025 visit, including the current clan chief himself. Production is small scale (~100,000 litres per annum) with most of the process up to and including distillation taking place in a single, long room. We still got a lot out of our standard tour, including a trip to the warehouse and a great tasting of two single malts at the end.
