Walk: An ode to Onesiphorus Tyndall Bruce

A name like Onesiphorus Tyndall Bruce is pretty memorable already, but it clearly wasn’t enough for the descendants of this local Falkland laird, who had a large stone monument built in honour of the man after his death in 1855. Standing on a minor summit on the edge of Fife’s Lomond Hills, the cylindrical memorial is well seen from nearby, larger East Lomond but makes a decent target in its own right, with an interesting ascent past the forest and follies of lower Maspie Den. After admiring the views from the base of the monument, retrace your steps for a short distance before an alternative descent route is possible; routes directly off the north side of the hill are very steep and not recommended.

🥾 On our last visit

Wildlife: Treecreeper near start, buzzard, thrushes, robins, tits, yellowhammers, bullfinches, blackbirds; sheep in adjacent fields, cows in barn.

Weather: Mostly sunny with fast moving clouds, about 5ºC, windy.
