Not to be confused with its better-kept counterpart in Port Glasgow, this clifftop ruin close to St Monans has metal fencing preventing visitors from getting right up close, but you can peek through the bars or admire it from along the coastline in either direction. There’s probably been a castle on this site since the 13th century, but today’s version has been extensively remodelled, including by David Leslie, 1st Baron Newark, who made the place into something of a mansion in the second half of the 17th century. Much has since fallen into the sea, with the remaining brickwork worth little more than a brief pause while walking the Fife Coastal Path.

💬 From the car park it’s a 5- to 10-min walk (each way) to the castle. Head down to the coast and follow the clear Fife Coastal Path coastline right (west). At high tide the first part may be submerged; follow the alternative “High Tide Route” signposted from the car park entrance.
