With a population of just 1,400 or so, Abernethy is a smallish village, but one that punches above its weight in terms of tourist appeal. The village became a burgh as early as 1476, though most of the buildings date to the 16th or 17th century. Considerably older is the unusual round tower dominating the skyline; its spiral stair can be climbed for superb views if you pick up the key from the interesting village museum first. Abernethy sits beside the main road from Perth towards and through northern Fife, with the Ochil Hills immediately to the south and the Earn and Tay estuaries nearby to the north. The surrounding landscape can be well seen from a wander up nearby Castle Law. But what about Abernethy biscuits? – you might be asking. Well, this one’s a red herring: these digestive-like snacks are named after the surgeon who invented them, but there’s no link to Abernethy village.
