📌 Moffat, Dumfries & Galloway

Come and take the waters of the Birnock Water, long famed for their health benefits! Or perhaps, don’t – this sulphurus spring is a bit of a grotty trickle; if the smell of rotten eggs doesn’t put you off, it’s worth knowing that the water is no longer seen fit for human consumption anyway. The town of Moffat is surrounded by multiple springs, but this one a mile to the north of the town centre was discovered in 1633 and later cemented the town’s reputation as a desirable spa resort. Water was piped from here to a Baths Hall so tourists could “take the waters” without having to walk up the hill. The old well building itself is next to a convenient car park, and visitors can peer into the mossy spring and look over the railings into the small gorge below.
