This smart set of buildings in the scattered crofting district of Uig is a real hub for the area, comprising a museum, archives, cafe, primary school and fire station. Alongside informative displays about crofting and other local industries, there’s a small reconstruction of a blackhouse as well as a section devoted to Viking living practices. There are also multiple opportunities to play chess with different sizes of Lewis chess pieces; the original walrus ivory figures were found in dunes behind Uig Sands in 1831.
