📌 Eye Peninsula, Isle of Lewis
★
This unusual-looking memorial stands at the east end of the causeway connecting the Eye Peninsula to the rest of the Isle of Lewis. Along with the Gress Raiders Monument and Pairc Raiders Monument elsewhere in north Lewis, it remembers a time of unjust land ownership that resulted in protest raids by crofters on nearby farms / estates. The raids at Aiginish took place in 1888 and initially led to 14 raiders being arrested, but helped start a shift in public opinion eventually resulting in fairer apportioning of crofting land to individual families.
