📌 Eoropie, Isle of Lewis
★★
This pocket-sized place of worship is now dedicated to St Moluag, a contemporary of St Columba and who first had a chapel built here in the 6th century – though the current building dates to the 12th to 16th century. The long religious history of the site has made St Moluag’s Church something of a pilgrimage destination over the years, particularly for those in need of healing; the building features an unusual side chapel which is connected to the main body of the church by a narrow window but with a separate external door, relegating pilgrims with communicable diseases to watch services some distance from the rest of the congregation. Services ceased after the Reformation, but the church may have been used for pagan worship for a while before becoming ruinous and eventually being restored by the Scottish Episcopal Church in the 1910s.
