Reputedly marking the site of the last battle between the Macaulay and Morrison clans, Clach an Trushal (or Stone of Compassion, in Gaelic: Clach an Truiseil) is probably Scotland’s tallest standing stone. This lichen-encrusted gneiss monolith thrusts nearly six metres into the sky close to the Isle of Lewis’s northwestern coastline. Originally it stood within a stone circle, but the stones forming the surrounding ring itself have been moved or repurposed.
