Located in a picturesque village close to the northern edge of Arbroath town, St Vigeans Museum is home to one of eastern Scotland’s best collections of Pictish carvings. There are 38 stones to marvel at, featuring symbols as diverse as biblical references, a deer in the process of being startled, contemporary costumes, mirrors, combs and Z-rods, and text in Latin, Pictish and Old Irish (these languages all on the same stone!). The intricacy of the carvings is certainly impressive, though non-members of Historic Environment Scotland may find the entrance fee a little steep.
