Located close to the Dornoch Firth some 25 miles north of Inverness, Balblair Distillery’s history goes all the way back to 1790, making it one of Scotland’s oldest. Despite a relocation in 1895 to capitalise on the coming of the railways, the water source has remained the same: one of the burns issuing from Struie Hill. Meanwhile, the smart logo which appears on bottles and branding is a nod to the nearby Clach Biorach standing stone, which bears the same Pictish symbols. If some parts of the distillery look strangely familiar to you, that may be because you’ve watched the 2012 film Angels’ Share, in which Balblair featured heavily. Tours are perhaps on the pricey side but ours (in 2024) was both entertaining and informative; photos of the production areas were however not permitted.
