📌 Helmsdale, Highland
★★★

Not many museums are as superbly laid out as Timespan – Helmsdale‘s local museum, art gallery and an important community hub. The heritage displays showcase the region’s history ranging from the Pictish stones and the Highland Clearances to fishing and other local industries, while a reconstructed street features shops and businesses from the mid to late 19th century. There’s even an interesting virtual reality experience where, with the help of headsets, you can explore how the nearby former township of Caen may have looked before the Clearances. If you’re visiting the area for an extended trip, this is an excellent place to start.
