Preston Tower is an excellent example of a pele (or peel) tower: small, fortified residences along the Anglo-Scottish border built between about 1350 and 1600. This one dates to 1392 and for just a couple of quid you can explore inside fully, including several tiny rooms restored to how they might have looked when the building was inhabited, and views over Northumberland from the roof. The tower used to be twice as large – half of the structure was quarried for its stone following the 1603 Union of the Crowns. A couple of woodland walks explore the surrounding grounds.
