📌 Loch Doon, East Ayrshire
★
Loch Doon Castle is a 13th century castle with a difference. It originally stood on an island in the middle of Loch Doon, but when the water level was artificially raised in 1935, the island was submerged. Instead of sinking beneath the waves, most of the ruin was transported – brick by brick – to the safety of the mainland. It must have been a painstaking task – but then again, it’s not every day that you come across a castle with 11 sides.
