Auchagallon Cairn is up to 4,000 years old and occupies a commanding position overlooking Machrie Bay, with views across to the Kintyre peninsula. It is a kerbed burial cairn, once containing the body of an important person placed in a stone-lined cist, and covered with a stone cairn. Fifteen upright stones form an outer “kerb” – plus a few more buried or missing ones. The ancient landscape at nearby Machrie Moor rightly receives more visitors, but this is still worth a stop if you’re passing by on the coast road.
