Easter Balmoral, Aberdeenshire
★★★
The clue is in the name: this traditional distillery close to Balmoral Castle has corresponding royal connections, supplying whisky to the royal family since 1848. Located five miles north from the Munro summit of Lochnagar, production is relatively small-scale and much of the finished product goes into Johnny Walker-branded spirits – but the regular tour understandably focuses on the distillery’s single malts, including their classic 12 year-old.
