This sumptuous 16th century tower house stands a few miles inland from the Moray coast between Forres and Nairn. Home of Clan Brodie until 2003, it’s now cared for by the National Trust, with guided tours giving access to the beautifully kept castle rooms – from the austere guard chamber to the opulent dining and drawing rooms (complete with stunning ceilings). The grounds are also worth a leisurely wander: a 10-minute walk west along a wide avenue brings you to an attractive pond, while to the east, a new and slightly weird Playful Garden (with further admission fee) features modern sculptures, tunnels and interactive installations. The ancient Rodney’s Stone can found alongside the entrance drive.
