📌 Village in Highland
★★
North of the busy road along Loch Alsh to the Skye Bridge, a beautiful and largely unspoiled peninsula waits to be explored. Plockton is the highlight: a surprisingly sizeable coastal village overlooking the lower part of Loch Carron, nicknamed the Jewel of the Highlands. Plockton has one of the only east facing harbours on the western seaboard, and the sheltered orientation combined with the warm Gulf Stream allows palm trees to grow at a latitude higher than might normally be expected. Highland cows roam freely – sometimes out to the uninhabited tidal island of Eilean nan Gamhainn – and boat trips take visitors to see the local seal colonies. The area also has one of the best path networks in the northwest, with routes leading to nearby beaches, Duncraig Castle and Càrn a Bhealaich Mhòir. If time is short, you should at least take the short path to the tiny knoll of Càrn na Frith Àird – accessed from the entrance to a newish housing estate on the north side of the village – for a magnificent vista up Loch Carron and towards Applecross.
