The lonely 12th century ruin of Red Castle sits on a bluff above the Lunan Water where it reaches the sea at Lunan Bay. It adds historic interest and a great viewpoint to this loveliest of beaches, and can be reached from the sand by crossing the mouth of the river – usually straightforward, but involving wet feet – or by a rough path from a nearby road. The brickwork doesn’t look too stable, so we don’t recommend getting too close.

π¬ From Lunan Bay beach, ford the mouth of the Lunan Water (means wet feet – easiest at low tide) – the castle is obvious on the far side. Alternatively, from the informal layby, it’s a 5-min walk to the castle on a narrow path.
