A few miles from the advancing outskirts of the Tyneside conurbation, the village of Heddon-on-the Wall contains the easternmost remaining stretch (of any significance) of Hadrian’s Wall. Though less remarkable than many of the more popular sites further west, it is built to a wider specification, which was then narrowed for most of the rest of the wall. This section runs for 220 metres alongside the B6518, with a corn-drying kiln built into the stonework at the west end.
