Midhowe is probably Orkney’s best preserved broch, and that’s despite some pretty stiff competition. It is one of a chain of at least nine brochs lining the banks of Eynhallow Sound, with a modern stone revetment protecting the structure from erosion by storm waves. The 2000+ year old interior is crowded with partitioned rooms, iron age furniture, a fireplace and even a water tank, providing a fascinating glimpse into an ancient way of life which we know little about.
