📌 Village in Moray

The small settlement of Burghead is situated at the east end of the 7-mile golden crescent of Burghead Bay. This headland has been populated since at least Pictish times, becoming a planned fishing village in the early 19th century. Today, it retains its status as an important local hub, belying the village’s small size. There is an ancient fort and subterranean shrine – both can still be visited, and the former is a good viewpoint for the coast and possible marine life. The Burning of the Clavie pagan fire festival is celebrated in Burghead annually on January 11th (New Year’s Day from the pre-Gregorian calendar), when a barrel is set alight and processed around the village streets.
