Both of these sights are visible from the A7 road, but why not stop to have a closer look? Stow Auld Kirk and the nearby packhorse bridge both date from the 17th century. The kirk lies within an old graveyard with tombstones commemorating many local families; the main place of worship in the area is now St Mary’s Church of Wedale, a few hundred metres to the south. The packhorse bridge lies just below the newer church and this key crossing point on the Gala Water was responsible for Stow flourishing; the nearby information board suggests that the site is shared with the Stow witch executions, which took place a few years before the building of the bridge.
