Visit Orkney and you’re likely to hear a phrase something like, “scratch the surface of Orkney and it bleeds history”. Nowhere more so than little Rousay, often referred to as Egypt of the North. Amongst hundreds of archaeological sites, perhaps the finest of all is Midhowe Chambered Cairn. This vast Neolithic tomb is protected from the elements by a hangar-like structure which also allows viewing from above (and shelter in case of bad weather!).
