Loch Katrine has no public roads around its shoreline (except directly to the two piers), so exploring it properly involves walking, cycling… or taking a passenger ferry from Trossachs Pier or Stronachlachar. In stepping aboard you’ll be following in the footsteps of hundreds of thousands of visitors: the SS Sir Walter Scott steamship made her maiden voyage in 1900, so being able to travel on the same boat today is somewhat miraculous (other ferries are available). Views from the deck towards Ben Venue, Ben A’an, Ben Lomond and Loch Katrine’s many islands are outstanding. Look out for tiny Factor’s Island near Stronachlachar: base clad in stone, this is where outlaw Rob Roy Macgregor imprisoned the Duke of Montrose’s rent collector as a reaction to his family’s eviction.
