📌 Painted rock in St Fillans, Perth & Kinross

Crocodile Rock – sometimes also called the St Fillan’s Monster – is a comically painted rock close to the A85 just east of St Fillans. It was painted over a century ago (possibly by local youths) to the delight of rail passengers passing on the now dismantled railway, and evidently still receives fresh coats of paint. Access involves a mile’s walk – see notes below – but it’s also visible from passing cars if you know exactly when and where to look. An even sillier painted frog also nestles amongst roadside vegetation by the entrance to the village – though this one isn’t worth making a special trip to see!

💬 From Station Road it’s a 1 mi or 20-min walk (each way) to Crocodile Rock (⬤ Easy). From the far (north) end of the road, walk up the track (second right after the dismantled railway bridge). This zigzags east around a farm, then descends to join the old railway bed. Crocodile Rock is after a further 0.5 mi on the left. Frog Rock is next to the A85 0.5 mi east of St Fillans village centre, 🧭 NN 706240 / 🛰️ 56.390512,-4.097945. When approaching the village, look out for the rock on the right (north) verge immediately before the triple slash 30 mph speed limit sign.
