The Stones of Stenness are one of the four main attractions of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site. They are found just southeast of the road causeway connecting Stenness village to the neck of land around the Ring of Brodgar. A dozen stones once formed another massive stone circle here, but only four stones remain upright from the original dozen – partly thanks to a local 19th century farmer who damaged the circle after getting fed up with sightseers trampling across his land. As a result, the Stones of Stenness can’t compete with the nearby Ring of Brodgar for completeness. But what they lack in number and overall scale they more than make up for in height – up to 6 metres – and also pre-date the Ring of Brodgar by 500 years. A path from the far corner of the circle gives access to the Barnhouse Settlement, while by the roadside next to the causeway is the impressive Watch Stone.
