Southwest Scotland’s relatively benign climate means it plays host to a huge number of public gardens, and one of most spectacular is Logan Botanic Garden on the Rhins of Galloway. The gardens are run by the same charity that manages the popular Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, but this less visited site is miles more exotic. The hilly, 11 acre site has a stunning walled garden, ruined castle and pond (drained when we were there), woodland area, bamboo forest, glasshouses, discovery centre – and palm trees everywhere you look. Allow a few hours to explore it all, or even longer if you’ve picked up one of the bewilderingly detailed audio guides from the ticket office. Not to be confused with Logan House Gardens which are immediately to the north.
