Monteviot House is the one time residence of the Marquises of Lothian, built in the mid 18th century. Several extensions from different decades have resulted in a building which appears rather fragmented to the first-time visitor, but makes for a fascinating tour once you step inside. The grandeur of the 1960s Great Hall contrasts with the intimacy of some of the older parts of the building, including the substantially unaltered River Wing; photography wasn’t permitted on our tour, but that made it easier to concentrate on the extensive knowledge being imparted by our guide! The grounds – which can be explored by purchasing a separate ticket – are an even bigger draw. Covering a huge area extending all the way down to the River Teviot, they are amongst the most varied we’ve seen in Scotland, encompassing a rose garden, herb garden, rockeries, water garden, arboretum, a “persistent imagination” area and more. Allow at least a few hours for the house and grounds combined.
