Ben Ledi rises majestically above Callander – this is one of those abrupt points where the Scottish Lowlands end and the Highlands clearly begin. At 879 metres above sea level the summit is the highest in the Trossachs and an outstanding viewpoint; at least nine different lochs and reservoirs can be seen from various points on this route, illustrating why this region is known as Scotland’s answer to the English Lake District. Combining the south ridge “tourist route” with a slightly quieter, rougher return via the impeccably-scented Stank Glen makes a great circuit.

Wildlife: Chaffinches, wrens, robins, a redpoll. Hairy caterpillars, butterflies, frogspawn & tadpoles.
Weather: Mostly sunny, a little hazy, blustery wind higher up. 13°C at glen level during the afternoon.
