If you only have time to see one Pictish stone, perhaps this one should be it. Sueno’s Stone is the largest Pictish stone in Scotland, over 20 ft high and covered with exceptionally clear carvings drawn by Pictish artists in the 9th or 10th century. One side is a Christian cross and some sort of important event such as an inauguration; the other depicts a battle scene with horsemen, corpses and foot soldiers. The detail is almost unparalleled amongst Pictish carvings, and provides priceless information about life in the kingdom of Fortriu over 1,000 years ago. A glass box protects the slab from the elements but can make taking clear photographs difficult; on balance, it’s probably an acceptable trade-off.
