This ancient well in the middle of the fishing village of Burghead is a fascinating and unusual place. Over the centuries it has had several uses, possibly starting out as a shrine to Celtic water gods or even as a the centre of a Pictish cult when it was located within the ramparts of Burghead Fort, over 1,500 years ago. At some point it may have been used for Christian baptisms, before being converted to a water supply as the planned village was established in 1808. Steps lead down to a subterranean chamber and cistern, where several archaeological finds have been discovered.

  1. The Birthday well it wasn’t shrine by Celtic but before that .That well was originally was a Roman bath when the Romans dig it up
